HIV/AIDS- STOP THE DISCRIMINATION!

Sandy (not real name) had been working in a government organization for sometime. In fact, she got retained after her one year mandatory National Youth service corps deployment to the same organization. She is a bright and intelligent worker, who has contributed a lot to the development of that organization. Sandy is HIV positive. She found out about her status while she was in the university studying microbiology.

As part of an experiment to demonstrate that micro-organisms are ubiquitous, some of them were asked to cough into petri dishes which were cultured for 36 hours. Sandy volunteered for her group and coughed. She went on with her normal duties, thinking nothing of the experiment. 2 days later, while receiving lectures, there was an announcement for the person who had coughed into the group 2 petri dish to come urgently to the lab. When she got to the lab, she was told that the organism cultured from her throat was in fact, not ubiquitous but was a result of an opportunistic infection caused by immune suppression. She was asked how she felt, she said she felt great. She was then encouraged to go for tests. That was how she discovered her status.
3 years later, she landed herself a dream job working in the admin department of a government parastatal. They got a memo from the MD informing them of the intended visit of an NGO, to educate them more on HIV/AIDS and conduct free counselling and testing. Sandy wasn't perturbed. Her job's mission statement stated that they were an equal opportunity employer and didn't discriminate. The training day came and when it was her turn to be tested, she declined. Her colleagues (they didn't know her status) called her lily livered and urged her to go for a test. She reluctantly went in order to get them off her back but was quick to tell the nice looking, friendly technician that she was already aware of her status and had been living positively for a couple of years. The technician counselled her and availed her with resources and contacts in case she needed anything. 5 days later she got a call from the deputy MD, asking to see her immediately. "How could you"? She screamed before Sandy could shut the door. "I'm sorry ma, did I forget to do something"?
"You didn't tell me you were HIV positive, you wicked soul! I invited you to my home, left you alone with my kids countless times, not knowing you had the virus"! Sandy was in shock, to say the least. "Just so you know, your services are no longer required here. Expect to hear from management in a couple of days"!
Sandy is crushed and suicidal. She never expected this kind of treatment to be meted out to her as a result of her status.

PLEASE STOP THE DISCRIMINATION!
